How to Request a Company Name Update (CIPC & New Entity)

What You Need to Provide When Renaming or Replacing a Registered Company

This article explains how to request an update to your company name in our system and the documents or actions required depending on the type of change.

Summary

  • To change a company name in our system you must state the new name and confirm whether it is a direct company name change or a different company registration. Required actions differ for each case.

How to request a company name update

  1. Provide the new company name you want recorded in our system.
  2. Confirm which scenario applies:
    • Direct company name change: the existing company remains the same legal entity but its registered name has changed.
    • Different company: the entity to be recorded is a separate legal entity (not a rename of the existing company).

Requirements and next steps

Direct company name change

  • Provide an official CIPC document showing the name change.
  • Once the CIPC document is received, we will update the name on our system.

Different company (new legal entity)

  • A new contract must be signed for the different company before we record it on our system, supporting docs will be required for new entity.

Contract handling

  • If a new contract is required, we will issue the new contract for signing and proceed once it is completed.

Examples (typical scenarios)

  • If your business has simply rebranded and the underlying company registration was updated with CIPC, supply the CIPC name-change document and the system name will be updated.
  • If you have formed or will use a separate company to take over services, expect to sign a new contract for that company before it can be recorded.

Tips for a smooth update

  • Clearly state the exact new company name when you submit the request.
  • Indicate explicitly whether this is a direct name change or a different company to avoid delays.
  • Provide the full, official CIPC document for direct name changes to enable prompt processing.
  • Be prepared to sign a new contract if the change involves a different company.

Conclusion Submit the new company name and confirm whether it is a direct name change or a different company. For direct name changes, provide the CIPC name-change document. For a different company, sign a new contract to have that entity recorded in our system.
